Julia Lautin, Data Scientist at Scania

From linguistics to machine learning – meet Julia Lautin, Data Scientist at Scania

11 DECEMBER 2025

When Julia Lautin first joined Scania, she didn’t imagine she’d one day be training machine learning models. In fact, she started out as a terminologist, with a background in linguistics – supporting technical writers and translators with consistent terminology. But as she began collaborating more with IT teams, her interest in data, structure and logic grew.

“I saw so many parallels between language systems and information systems,” Julia explains. “It was a natural step – and Scania gave me the opportunity to explore it.”

Through Scania’s internal Personnel Enhancement Programme (PEP), Julia retrained as a developer and went on to work in both Sales & Marketing and R&D – two worlds that gave her a unique understanding of the business as a whole. “It’s like a three-legged stool,” she says. “All parts – the technology, the customer focus, the product – need to be in balance.”

Today, Julia works as a Data Scientist within Warranty IT – a team tasked with improving how Scania handles warranty claims from workshops and clients.

Work smarter

“When a workshop files a claim, someone at Scania needs to investigate whether it qualifies as a warranty case,” Julia explains. “We support that process by building tools that help case handlers make better, faster and fairer decisions.”

Her team uses machine learning to improve quality and efficiency, but always with the human in mind. “It’s just as much about UX and customer experience as it is about data,” she says. “We visit workshops to really understand their needs – it’s about creating solutions that make their work easier, not harder.”

Team spirit, trust and the “Good Guy” mentality

Julia thrives in Scania’s collaborative, down-to-earth environment. “There’s a strong ‘good guy’ mentality here – we really care about doing the right thing, for our customers, each other and society,” she says. “And we’re trusted to shape our own ways of working. That’s incredibly motivating.”

Her team is open, supportive and unpretentious. And while they work flexibly – “we work wherever we’re awesome,” as she puts it – face-to-face time remains valuable.

Always moving forward

One year into her current role, Julia feels she’s found her place. “Scania took a chance on me – I hadn’t worked as a data scientist before – and I’m so glad they did.”

She loves that there’s always a new challenge or direction to explore. “You never stand still here. There’s always a next step – and people believe in you enough to let you take it.”
