Why Scania batteries have been specifically developed for trucks

Why did Scania develop batteries that are specifically meant for heavy-duty transport? Find out in this film where we compare passenger car batteries to Scania truck-unique batteries.

Having a passenger car battery in a truck is possible. But it’s kind of like wearing your slippers on a cold winter’s day. They are still footwear, but there are more fitting shoes for that purpose.

 

This is why Scania chose to start from a clean sheet to develop the ideal battery cell for heavy-duty vehicles.

 

It has enabled Scania to specify the batteries for the demanding requirements of heavy-duty transport, including battery lifetime, range, charging and power output. In particular, our batteries are designed to be charged, used and re-charged over a total lifespan of 1.5 million kilometres.

Did you know? Six facts about Scania’s batteries:

  • The Scania trucks use a specific chemical, nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) mix in their battery cells.
  • The chemical mix has been developed especially for heavy-duty vehicles, and makes the cells more energy dense.
  • This means smaller battery packs, which gives customers a greater flexibility of chassis placement.
  • The high energy density also means greater charging capacity, lower energy consumption and increased payload for the truck.
  • The life of the battery cells is also considerably longer and more suitable for a vehicle that’s used for nine to ten hours a day – which is a lot longer than an average passenger car is driven.
  • It’s also the world’s most sustainable battery cell, produced in northern Sweden with clean hydropower.
