Electrify smarter: why Scania’s depot charging solutions stand out

Depot charging is the key to cost-efficient electrification. With the right setup, hauliers can cover up to 85 percent of their energy needs on-site – cutting costs and boosting uptime.

Electrification is transforming more than just the trucks – it’s reshaping the entire business model for hauliers. As energy and infrastructure move to the core of daily operations, depot charging is a strategic necessity.

With the right setup, depot solutions can cover up to 85 percent of a fleet’s energy needs on-site, offering hauliers greater control, lower costs, and improved uptime (see box below).

End-to-end charging solutions

To meet this shift head-on, Scania works with its integrated partner Erinion – a company fully owned by Scania, specialised in charging solutions and focused on providing 40,000 new electric charging points at customer locations across Europe by 2030.

“Through Erinion, Scania offers everything from energy needs analysis and depot system design to service, operation, and support to ensure uptime,” says Kim Alltorp, Head of Marketing and Communication at Erinion.

“That includes hardware such as chargers, transformers, power cabinets, solar panels, and energy storage – as well as smart software and control systems,” she adds.

Combined expertise in vehicles and charging

“Thanks to Erinion, Scania has strengthened its position in heavy vehicle electrification, accelerating innovation in the fast-moving charging landscape,” Alltorp emphasises.

“We work as one team, giving customers access to the combined expertise of both Scania and Erinion,” she says. “In many cases, Scania leads the customer relationship, especially in the early stages.”

“Together, we offer a complete solution where vehicle and charging work as one. It’s not just a truck and a charger – it’s an integrated system tailored to our customers’ needs. When it comes to charging infrastructure and operations, Erinion complements Scania’s offer by building the future-proof ecosystem that profitable electrification demands.”

Maximising site utilisation and energy efficiency

A well-designed depot charging solution offers clear financial advantages for hauliers. When strategically located, a depot or destination charging site can be opened to external operators during selected hours – turning unused capacity into a new revenue stream.

“This is a great example of how Scania supports hauliers in improving their total cost of ownership – by maximising site utilisation and creating opportunities for additional income. Another is the use of smart software to optimise energy use and lower electricity costs,” says Alltorp.

How the charging mix will look

Charging strategies will vary depending on your operation. Here's how each charging type contributes to long-haul, regional, and urban transport:

Depot Charging

  • Long-haul: 50–55%
  • Regional: 60%
  • Urban: 75–85%

Key feature – the foundation. Reliable, cost-efficient, and ideal for overnight charging when trucks are parked. Handles the majority of your energy needs.

Destination Charging

  • Long-haul: 10–15%
  • Regional: 20%
  • Urban: 10%
Key feature – smart downtime. Takes advantage of stops while loading or unloading at hubs, terminals, or customer locations.

Public Charging

  • Long-haul: 30–35%
  • Regional: 20%
  • Urban: 10%

Key feature – on-the-road backup. Flexible and fast, but typically more costly. Best used strategically. Scania Charging Access helps simplify planning and payment.
